I'm Ba-a-a-ck!

A lengthy absence to take care of personal and legal matters was opportunity to rethink my entire novel. I’m writing faster than I ever have in the past 3 years. I’m finally past 36,000 words of my first draft and I count that as “half-way done” before the enormous task of revising a 92,000 word mess.

I learned something very important for the future - always send a spoiler synopsis in a query letter. In fact, my novel doesn't sound like all that much without a full summary which I have not posted here.

Many of the previous synopses I wrote sounded as if my novel were a simple revenge story, but it would not be doing the narrative justice when it’s really about the grief of love and redemption. So! For anyone who still occasionally reads this blog, Forget everything I said before because my description of the story has changed significantly.

I went with a "minimalist" approach in cover art today.

Hard to believe but I haven't been here for a year! After a disastrous run for US Congress, where I learned that the California Democratic Party doesn't care about democracy, I'm back with a fresh start on my novel.

Distance from the emotional subject matter helps and I have reached the conclusion that there is formula or rather, a style for literary fiction just as there is for genre fiction. Now my dilemma is to tell the story the way I want or to or edit it into an accepted style that get its published. Not easy...I did not expect the realm of literary fiction to be as reactionary as genre fiction. Maybe because I come the entertainment industry and the fine art world where there's art and then there's crap that sells. If something is art, there should be no rules but that the artist in me talking.

"It's You, Only You (Mein Schmerz)" - Lene Lovich
"Stop! In the Name of Love" - The Supremes
"I'm Gonna Follow You" - Pat Benatar
"Runaway Boys" - Stray Cats

"Spellbound" - Rachel Sweet

Advice on writing fiction says your characters should have full biographies, back stories and physical descriptions. My characters have their own mix tapes. I used to scan the record collections of new acquaintances because I think you can tell a lot about a person by their taste in music.
